Ben Ward is currently a student studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, whilst pursuing a professional career as a pianist, saxophonist and musical director.
He is in demand as a saxophone player both in big bands and for smaller functions. Ben regularly plays tenor and baritone saxophones on The Magic of Motown UK Tour and has performed at many other events nationwide.
Ben is also a highly skilled musical director and pianist in the context of musical theatre. Having played for over forty productions around the Midlands area, he is a ‘first-call’ player known for his reliability and strong sight-reading skills. Ben regularly works as a vocal coach/rehearsal pianist and has received commendations for his band and orchestra direction and conducting. He plays on the London scene as a pianist/accompanist, including working with current West End talent, and has also worked in New York with Broadway performers in this capacity.
He is the musical director of ‘The Ben Ward Big Band’, a high-energy 20-piece jazz orchestra, comprised of talented music students and top professional players. The band regularly performs extremely challenging charts to sell-out audiences.
Ben spent the summer of 2019 studying jazz improvisation at New York University with Dr. David Shroeder and other international greats, including Joe Martin, Jay Anderson, and Alan Ferber. As well as this, Ben was lucky enough to take masterclasses from members of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band in Los Angeles, including Gordon himself and world-class saxophonists Brian Scanlon and Eric Marienthal.
